A responsible path into dog training and behaviour

Teaching people as well as observing dogs

A class assistant may prepare the space, help participants follow the instructor’s plan and record observations. Independent consultations add planning, communication, follow-up and decisions about cases beyond your competence. Enjoying time with dogs is a starting point; explaining a task patiently to a person is an equally important skill.

Compare workplaces by how they explain methods and manage difficult situations. Ask to observe a class with permission. Notice whether instructions are understandable, animals have space and the instructor adapts the session when needed. Discuss the written process for seeking veterinary or more experienced professional support.

Separate education from independent assessment

Ask a provider what is taught, who observes your practice and what you must demonstrate to pass. Do not assume that attendance makes you ready for complex consultations. IAABC assesses existing knowledge and experience rather than supplying the training leading to its credentials. Its current consultant titles are species-specific; verify the exact designation instead of relying on a broad “animal behaviour consultant” label.

Show observation and coaching skills

Keep a practice log with permission: goal, setting, what you observed, what the instructor asked you to do and feedback. Example only: “Assisted a beginner class by explaining the instructor’s exercise and checking participants understood it; recorded questions for the lead trainer.” Avoid client identities, diagnostic labels and claims that you resolved cases you only observed.
